Each year in the U.S. there are approximately 250,000 knee injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The ACL is the most commonly torn ligament in the knee, a devastating injury that would end an athlete’s season and affect them possibly for seasons to come. In recently released research, there have been scientifically proven programs to help reduce the chance and occurrence of ACL tears, especially in female athletes, by up to 88%!

The staff at Robinwood Orthopaedic Specialty Center would like to invite you to a free educational seminar that will discuss why knee injuries are more prevalent among female athletes and what to expect following an ACL tear. This will be followed by a discussion on screening and training techniques for preventing ACL tears. This FREE seminar is open to all athletes, parents, and coaches. Learn what you can do to avoid this devastating, season-ending injury.

When: May 29th, 2013

Preoperative Education/Physical Therapy Services

Research has shown a short-term preoperative program of education and physical therapy can accelerate early functional recovery of patients (younger than 70), especially with a total hip replacement. Preoperative therapy can help reduce the likelihood of postoperative complications such as stiffness and pain and help to build a base of strength to better improve your ability to walk and perform normal, routine activities of daily living after surgery. The physical therapist will focus on developing your independence by increasing your ability to move with ease by tailoring an exercise plan to increase your strength and endurance before and after surgery. You will be shown special ways to walk and move to ensure your safety and prepare your body for your new joint.
The staff at Robinwood Orthopaedic Specialty Center will begin to work with you two-six weeks before your scheduled surgery or as the surgeon feels is appropriate. The physical therapist will initiate individualized and one on one preoperative education and physical therapy prior to receiving your total joint procedure. That way, everyone knows what to expect before, during and after the procedure. The program is designed to address:

            Safety Precautions

            Deep Vein Thrombosis (blood clots)

Getting out of bed

Transfer techniques (from toilet & tub)

Weight-bearing status

Gait training with use of assistive devices, such as canes, walkers, reachers, etc. Exercise

Stair training

Fall prevention

Ensuring a safe home environment

Potential postoperative complications

Pain management
