Surgery

Surgery, sometimes called an operation, used to always be open, with an incision large enough for a surgeon to work inside a patient’s body.

For some medical problems today, however, surgeons can also do arthroscopic surgery, which requires only very small incisions.

Orthopaedic surgeons choose the surgical techniques that work best for treating the patient and resolving the problem. The orthopaedic surgeons at Robinwood Orthopaedic Specialty Center have training and experience in all the current surgical techniques.

Fracture Care

A fracture is the medical term for a broken bone. Fractures can occur after a traumatic injury such as a skiing accident or a fall. However, broken bones can sometimes happen with no apparent injury in what is called a stress fracture.

Broken bones are treated in a variety of ways, depending on the type, location and severity of the fracture. Most people are familiar with a closed treatment: using casts, splints or braces to hold the broken bones securely so they heal correctly.

Surgical treatments include the use of percutaneous fixation techniques in which wires or pins to hold the bone in position are placed through the skin without opening the fracture site.

The fracture site may sometimes need to be exposed surgically so the broken bone can be stabilized with an implant such as a plate, screw, pin, rod or wire.

Fracture care often includes physical therapy to restore normal range of motion.

Many of the physicians at Robinwood Orthopaedic Specialty Center have additional training and experience in fractures. (Go to Meet Our Medical Staff for more information about our physicians.)
