To provide the best comprehensive medical care possible with the least inconvenience for our patients, the Robinwood Orthopaedic Specialty Center offers a wide variety of diagnostic tools at our Hagerstown facility.
X-rays are useful in diagnosing many medical problems. In orthopaedics, X-rays are commonly used for fractures (both to detect broken bones and to check on their healing), joint replacements and disc diseases. X-rays expose the body to minimal amounts of radiation and yield information essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
Bone Density Studies
Bone density studies are an important tool in diagnosing osteoporosis, which causes bones to become porous and weak. People with osteoporosis are more likely to have serious fractures, such as broken hips, back pain and curved spines. Fortunately, osteoporosis is treatable, with medications that prevent excessive breakdown of bone. Adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D as well as weight-bearing exercises can also help build strong bones.
Osteoporosis can affect both sexes but is more common in women. Consider asking about a bone density study if you:
- Are over age 45 or reached menopause before age 45
- Have a close relative with osteoporosis
- Are underweight
- Have any medical condition that can weaken your bones
- Take medicines that can weaken bones, such as thyroid hormones or asthma steroids
